3 Scenic Bike Trails... Augusta, GA

Augusta is Georgia's second oldest city (1736), long known for hosting the Masters Golf Tournament. Recently, for recreational bikers the area now offers 3 off-street bike trails that allow visitors to safely explore the history and natural beauty via bicycle. Augusta Riverwalk (2 mi.) features the Savannah River and downtown. The Augusta Canal Trail (7 mi.) features the best biking and the best views. The River Levee Trail (2 mi.) serves to connect the 2 other trails. (Detailed map, photos below.)

Below are brief overviews of 3 biking options - with links to full page descriptions and photos. The trails are both paved and easy hardpack mostly following the Savannah River and Augusta Canal towpath - well marked with parking, restrooms, historic sites, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks. The 3 trails are linked and all or part can be done as a single ride. But given the different ways the trails link, our map may prove especially useful for visitors in planning a ride.

Augusta Riverwalk - 2 miles along the Savannah River in Downtown Augusta...

  • Runs along the south (Georgia) side of the Savannah River from 6th to 13th Sts.
  • Built on two levels, linked by ramps and stairs. The upper level is much better for biking.
  • Brick paved, also popular with walkers and runners.
  • At the northwest end, link to River Levee Trail, which connects to the Augusta Canal Trail.
  • Continue past the Marina to 5th St. and the multi-use Freedom Bridge crossing the river to South Carolina.

Augusta Canal Trail - 7 miles from Martinez to Augusta on the historic Augusta Canal Towpath...

  • Scenic trail on the towpath along the historic Augusta Canal (1845), paralleling the Savannah River.
  • Trail runs on an easy-to-ride packed dirt surface with some paved sections at each end.
  • Excellent views of the Augusta Canal, and of the Savannah River and Rapids.
  • Most scenic section is the 4 miles from Savannah Rapids Park to the Augusta Waterworks.
  • From Lake Olmstead Trailhead, continue into Augusta on the Mill Village Trail, or link to the River Levee Trail to the Augusta Riverwalk.

River Levee Trail - 2 miles linking Augusta Canal Trail and Augusta Riverwalk...

  • Link to Augusta Canal Trail at Lake Olmstead Trailhead, and to Augusta Riverwalk at 13th St.
  • Fully paved trail running between the Savannah River and Riverwatch Pkwy.
  • Includes scenic bridges and boardwalks, but some road noise.
